Over the past few months, I have been writing about everyday observations through Before Setting Sail and Signals.
Things I noticed.
Things I misread.
Moments when I stopped.
As I gathered these small records, I kept returning to the same thought.
When we feel lost in life, we often begin searching for a new answer or the right direction.
But before that, perhaps we need to know where we are now.

The Compass is not a book that gives you answers.
Nor does it hand you a new compass.
I believe we each already have one.
What this book offers is not the compass itself, but sixteen coordinates for observing your present location—the perspective needed before you can use it.
Where am I now?
What am I overlooking?
What have I assumed I already understand?
Sometimes, seeing our present location a little more clearly can change the next step more than we expect.

After finishing this book, I was reminded that a voyage does not end within its pages.
In reality, some days are calm.
On others, we do not move as we hoped.
There are days when we misread what we see.
There are days when we stop.
That is why observation is not something we do once.
We return to it, again and again.

This blog exists for the same reason.
It is not a place for explaining The Compass.
It is a place to record what it looks like to live this way.
Today, this was the view.
This is what I misread.
This is what I might try next.
A record of observation, a tentative hypothesis, and the next part of the voyage.

When you finish this book, you may not have more answers than before.
But perhaps you will be able to see where you are with a little more accuracy.
And perhaps, using your own compass, you will be able to choose your next step for yourself.
July 22.
One more record will join this voyage.
And from here, I will continue to observe.
